The Two Most Successful Methods for Germinating Seeds

The Two Most Successful Methods for Germinating Seeds

There are few things worse than not being successful when trying to germinate your seeds. It leads to wasted money and time, not to mention what that little seed could have become! Here we’re going to go over the two most successful methods for germinating seeds with the help of our friends over at Elev8 Seeds. You’ll also be getting some dos and don’ts. This way you’ll be able to pop seeds with ease! Don’t forget to check out the useful paper towel method infograph below and share with your friends!

Root Cube Method (Most Successful)

When using root cubes, simply soak the cube in PH’d water (5.5 – 6.5). Place your seeds into the wholes in the cubes and push down about a half-inch. DO NOT use any nutrients as it will lead to burning the seedlings. Check your cubes daily to make sure the cubes don’t dry out. The ambient temperature should be between 70 – 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Seedlings sprout using the root cube germination method.

Paper Towel Method

All you’ll need to do for this method is take 3 paper towel sheets and fold them until you have a square that’s about 6 inches on each side. Then completely soak the paper towels and place the seeds on top of the paper towel square. Take 1 more paper towel sheet and fold it into a 6-inch square, then soak with water and place it on top of the seeds. Then place the wet paper towel squares in a gallon-sized plastic bag or place them between 2 paper plates.

When the tails are about an inch long, burry the tails in drenched soil with the head barely poking through the surface. Once a root is about an inch long, it’s time to pot! Be extremely careful at this stage as to not break the roots. Use a small pot with plenty of drainages, or even a plastic cup with a lot of holes in the bottom for the excess water to escape. Put your potting soil into the pot and mix with water. Make sure that all the soil is fully saturated and ready for the seed. With either your finger or a thick pen, make a hole roughly the same depth as the taproot directly in the center of the pot. Now very carefully place the seedling in with the taproot face down while holding the seed so it doesn’t fall in. Gently fill in the hole with soil while leaving the top of the seed barely showing. Keep the soil saturated for the first couple of weeks and don’t worry about overwatering it at this stage until the roots are fully established. Once the roots are established, you can start to water normally. You can introduce quarter strength to half-strength nutrients after about two weeks.

-Pro Tip, DO NOT use heat pads or domes at any point in the germinating process.

I hope this helps out! These are the two most successful methods for germinating seeds.
